Today is my Dad’s birthday
Posted by angela on 05/28/08 in Domestic Ramblings

That’s a picture of me and my Dad was I was about 3 or 4 years old.
We lived in Frankfurt Germany at the time.
I still have that exact doll that I’m holding in the photo and have passed it down to Fiona and Kinsley to play with.
I believe my Dad is 65 years old today. I think he was born in 1943.
Even though you won’t see this:
Happy Birthday Dad

Happy birthday to your father. My father just had his birthday as well a few days ago. It was his 57th. Congratulations!
I wish I had lived in Frankfurt, Germany like you had. Boy am I jealous!

HA!! Gotta love those stairwell apartments in the background!!!!
I remember when we first moved to Germany we were in the temporary housing on the top floor of the stairwells. Each building was 4 stories and had three stairwells, with each stairwell having apartments on the left and right side. levels. BUT the TOP level was the old “maid” quarters, not regular apartments, and they stretched across 2 apartments on the floors below. So it was like having two apartments combined from end to end. There was a kitchen and livingroom in the front of the apartment. Then there was a bathroom with 2 seperate stalls, 2 sinks,(only one shower) then a big long tile hallway with 8 bedrooms!
Man, we used to put our socks on and run and slide down that big long hallway. We had a blast! And of course, it was the ONLY time during my father’s military career that we EACH had our own bedrooms with 3 to spare!!
Sorry, you got my reminiscing!!
Anyway– nice post for your father’s birthday!!

After high school when we moved back to Germany they had something similar in Wiesbaden.
At the top was the maid’s quarters like you described.
The kids used to fight over who was going to get to have a bedroom up there!!
It was more like a storage unit and sometimes the parents would let their teens have their rooms up there.
My parents would NEVER let that fly and I can see why too!!

You mean, someone in a first or second floor apartment could access the bedrooms on the top floor in a totally different apartment?? I’m confused!! :)_

The very top floor had storage and maid quarters. So some of the families would let their oldest teens have that as a bedroom.
I’ll see if I can get my friend Faithe to chime in on this discussion as she can probably explain it better than I can. She lived in Germany for most of her life.

OH!!! So they probably assigned each family in the stairwell one “bedroom” in the old maids’ quarters to use as “a storage unit”. And people actually let their kids turn them into a bedroom???? Yikes!! I can just imagine what actually happened up there without parental supervision.
I’ll bet the post commander had NO idea! I’m sure that they’d never have allowed that– with firecodes and such. Too much of a liability.
Wow.. I’m always amazed to hear some of the things parents allow their children to do!!

Happy Birthday to your Dad! Isn’t it amazing how we look at old photos and no matter where we were in the world at that time we find common threads. The clothing our parents wore, the stance of the children and the love between the two. Thanks for sharing a little of your history with us.

I’m glad you enjoyed that one! I love looking through old photos and blogging those occasions that fit with the photograph.
