Super Nanny Jo Jo’s Breast Feeding Advice

March 18th, 2007 by Angela | Filed under Ramblings.

Over on XXX there is some pretty HOT breast feeding discussion going on about the advice that Jo Jo gave on the last show. I don’t understand what all the uproar is over feeding breast milk to a 14 month old. I think that Jo Jo encouraging the Mom to move on from breast feeding is the right thing to do. I know because I breast fed two of my girls.

I breast fed Fiona for the first nine months. She weaned herself around the ninth month because in my opinion she wasn’t all that interested in the breast milk OR in getting that milk from my breast. Honestly, I wasn’t too interested in continuing the breast feeding ritual and wanted to get my body back. So Fiona’s weaning kind of happened naturally between the two of us and before she turned one.

Now Miss Kinsley took a little bit longer to wean. She was very interested in breast feeding and wanted absolutely nothing to do with the bottle. In fact, she went from breast feeding to sippy cup without flinching. Don’t get me wrong, she does drink from a bottle still but she is also an expert sippy cup drinker!! (I’m not getting rid of the bottle until the bottle liners are gone) So for now, we use both the sippy cup and the bottle.

Contrary to popular belief the feeding of breast milk past the first year is not really all that necessary. For those that want to spout off about how “breast is always best” doesn’t really know what they are talking about. Certainly it has it’s plusses but only during the first year. After the first year there really isn’t much benefit to having the child continue breast feeding. Now that they are already eating table food and being introduced to whole milk they are not missing a beat as far as I’m concerned.

I had a friend that breast fed her daughter until she was 18 months old and to this day regrets that she waited so long to wean her daughter from the breast. As a five year old today her daughter constantly puts her hands down her Mom’s shirt as if the boob was some sort of security blanket. I can relate to this because at 14 months Kinsley would see my breast in the bath tub and think it was time to eat right then and there. Come on, something is wrong if the baby can see your boob, grab it, and just start eating without checking to see if that would be ok. And if they can talk about it and grab it then that’s a sign it’s time to get the kid off the boob already!!

Super Nanny Jo Jo was right on telling Mom it was time to stop breast feeding. She was also right to tell the parents to get the kiddos out of their bed. I have never allowed my children to sleep with me in our bed. Once in awhile for a movie night is one thing but every day?? No Way!! Children need their own beds and their own space. Mom and Dad need their own bed and their own space too.
