Remembering September 11, 2001: OPEN THREAD: Where were you?

September 11th, 2009 by Angela | Filed under Ramblings.

9.11.2001

What were you doing September 11th 2001? I ask this question every year because I’m curious about what people were doing and thinking as the events unfolded. 3,000 people were murdered on U.S. soil. What was racing through your mind? Did you have to fly any where? Were you in route? Were you in or around any of the sites where the planes went down? What were you doing? Please leave a comment sharing your story on today’s post. I will include some links of interest and look forward to seeing what you shared with me. Thanks.

Powerful words to read on 9/11

Psalm 91
Safety of Abiding in the Presence of God
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”

3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler
And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side,
And ten thousand at your right hand;
But it shall not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes shall you look,
And see the reward of the wicked.

9 Because you have made the LORD, who is my refuge,
Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you,
Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra,
The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.

14 “Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him;
I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him,
And show him My salvation.”

It wouldn’t be a tribute without pictures. I know I have more people in my news reader with blogs that haven’t really had a chance to blog about September 11, 2001 or post their tribute yet. So what I will do is hop back online tonight in the late evening and post those new tributes that publish over on my personal blog I am Pooped.

  1. ptg says:

    Many are reading Psalms today. I saw this one on FaceBook:

    God is our refuge and strength,
    an ever-present help in trouble.
    Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way
    and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea…

    Psalm 46, 1-2

    They are comforting, more so than forcing a national day of service.

  4. [...] I asked the same question over on Domestic Divapalooza. That blog of mine where I talk about politics and subjects most people don’t want to talk about. I  knew when I posted that question earlier in the day I would miss all the blogs in my news reader where people would be writing about it tonight. I share my favorite 9.11.2001 tribute links, my own story of where I was on 9.11.2001, as well as who blogged it earlier today. What I hope to do over here on IamPooped.com is encourage those that read and participate in this part of the blogosphere to be encouraged to share your story in the comments section. If you have your own blog, by all means tell us where you were and link your blog post. I’d love to come check out your blog and read your story. [...]

    Thanks so much for including a link to my tribute to Christopher Grady. Project 2996 was a great experience; I really felt as though I knew him personally when I was done writing, which for a variety of reasons then made it harder to actually finish writing the post. It was one of those meta experiences, you make a connection to this person and then feel their loss. Does that make any sense?

  6. Angela says:

    The pictures of the people falling to their death and the splatter of blood on the pavement gets me every time.

    I can’t even imagine what it must have been like for them to make the decision to jump knowing they were about to be crushed.

    So Sad.

  7. ptg says:

    I had to watch hours of 911 videos to catch the few frames that showed the bloody result of falling 100 stories. Most of the coverage avoided this nastiness. I couldn’t see any reason to ignore the horrible immensity of what the Mohammedan fanatics did that day. I also grabbed some frames from video taken inside the buildings before they collapsed. They showed windows that looked like the stained glass you see in churches. It was gore.

    Minimizing the horrors of that day serves no one but the terrorists.

  8. Terri says:

    I was in the hospital, having given birth to my son the previous afternoon.

  9. Tom says:

    Angela,
    I was in the depths of USSTRATCOM, we were going through an exercise when someone told me a plane or something hit the WTC. I asked if it was an excercise message and they said “no, this shit is for real”. I walked to the nearest TV and watched in horror as the events unfolded. I was planning on going home early from work because it was my 9th wedding anniversary. A few hours later Pres. Bush flew into Offutt, then after a brief meeting with the powers that be, he flew away again. The weight he carried on his shoulders that day was evident in the way that he got back onto AF-1. God Bless GW, all the service members, and the people who stood strong that day in September.

  10. Angela says:

    Thank you for sharing your 9.11 stories.

    Tom, you were celebrating your 9th wedding anniversary and I was newly married for 3 months.

    Were you able to get a glimpse of George Bush?

  11. Morgan says:

    Hi, I’m a 15 year old kid and on this day I was in school…elementary school to be exact, I was 7 years old and in 3rd grade. I remember all of the teachers and faculty in the school turning on the tv. the minute after they heard the planes had crashed my mom rushed to my school. I got called down to the office and my mom was crying. saying that the first building had fallen. I knew exactly why she was crying. I knew my aunt hadn’t gotten out. She was still in the building when it fell. There were so many thoughts going trough my head.. maybe she was out to lunch maybe she wasn’t in the building. But i knew it was too good to be true. 3 or 4 hours later…my uncle got a call. she was gone. She was in the building and they new it. He caled us from new york. And everyday I always think of how I never got to say goodbye! I miss her. and I saw your post and I really was thinking about it today! Thanks!

  12. Angela says:

    Morgan, thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your story about your Aunt. Does your family make it out to NYC for the memorial? What’s it been like with each year that passes? I still can’t believe that it’s been eight years since 9.11.2001

  13. Jesus Christ says:

  16. James says:

    I was at home on September 11 @ this time. I live in Sydney it was night here. I remember it so clearly as if it were today in fact. Strangely I wish I were there when it happened because I wanted to help and I felt so sad and sick from what I saw, but then the natural selfishness kicked in and realized how lucky I am that I was not there. That does not help though, because I think of the poor people who took their lives by force. I think of their families, their friends, work colleagues etc and realize the pain that still is so evident today. I don’t want to hate, so I hate what those people did to these innocent US citizens, the Trade Tower employees. I don’t hate the people behinf it because I know you and I are above their level. God bless all those who went before us!!! XO

  17. James says:

    Before I forget guys I really wanted to reach out to all others affected and say this much; because there is not really anyone here where I am to talk to about it. The people here care but they feel distant because we are on the other side of the globe, I feel close mainly because I just visited your beautiful city, including the memorial. If I could have a dream come true it would be that: I would love to give a hug and a kiss to every person affected by this because it is so horrific and sad. “I really feel your pain and anxiety I do” I really do care guys and I’ve never in all honesty known anything to be so violent and viscous as the attack on September 11 World Trade Center. All I can do is prey for peace and get on with life knowing that those beautiful innocent people did nothing wrong whatsoever. My regret is I never knew them face to face!

  18. Angela says:

    James, that was beautiful. Thank you for participating in this discussion. If I ever make it to Australia maybe we will run into each other. How cool would that be?

  19. James says:

    I think that would be very cool Angela. I will be returning to NYC in the next year or two along with the possibility of visiting other states again. You take care Angela and you other guys who write on here. Remember to stand proud and strong. God bless the west!!!

  20. Angela says:

    Thank you so much James!
