New Catholic Vote Ad, I have questions

January 22nd, 2009 by Angela | Filed under Ramblings.

Does anybody out there have any raw data on how many Catholic people voted for Barack Obama?

Can anybody tell me what the Catholic Church says about abortion?

Would anyone out there like to quote me some verses from the bible that pertain to abortion?

Are there any women out there willing to share how abortion hurts women?

If you are Catholic and you voted for Barack Obama, are there other reasons you voted for him that have nothing to do with Abortion OR the right to life? (I’d be curious to hear from you)

Women out there that have had an abortion(s) – would you like to speak up OR vent about this issue? Feel free to do so  in the comment section. You can always make up a name OR comment anonymously if you do not feel comfortable using your real name.

Are you a woman reading, that has had an abortion, regrets having one, and doesn’t feel they have a right to speak out against abortion?

I want to hear from you!

Catholic Vote has GREAT, and very powerful ads. That one was no exception. They have some genius PR people.
I know that OFFICIALLY, the Catholic Church is against abortion, 100% and many of it’s members adhere to that. However, there are many Catholics who don’t embrace an awful lot of the Church’s positions nor actually live many of it’s tenents.
My kids go to a Catholic school, and I work there– my father’s family and my husband’s family are all Catholic, so I’m very versed in their beliefs. Several of the Catholic parents at my kids’ school have Obama/Biden bumper stickers. But there were also quite a few cars with McCain/Palin stickers, with a “You can’t be both Catholic and pro-abortion” sticker right next to it.

Like Tracy, I work at a Catholic school. Before the election, the school paper had articles on both sides of the issue. As a matter of fact, there was a big spread on which of the two candidates was actually more pro-life. Those who are very devout and believe abortion is wrong 100% of the time for any reason were supporters of McCain, largely because of the abortion issue. Those who supported Obama generally made the argument that he was MORE pro-life because of his OTHER policies (not related to abortion).

That’s an interesting bumper sticker Tracy, the one about how you can’t be Catholic and Pro-Abortion. Has anybody ever discussed the topic at church? Have they ever addressed the topic via a church service? Do you know?

Hi Jennifer! Yippee! You have a blog that I could add in my Google reader. Now I can follow your posts and comment. Fun stuff.

My stance on abortion has evolved over the years. It has come full circle and thanks to very good friends and encouragement from trusted individuals I’m not afraid to speak out against abortion any more.

Thank you so much for your comments ladies!!

I honestly don’t know if abortion is spoken about during regular church services– I only go to SCHOOL masses to play piano for the school choir, and since almost the entire congregation during those services are K-8th grade kids, the priests don’t get into things like that. Very simple sermons, love your neighbor, be kind to people, trust in God, etc, etc.

Interesting timing— I just got back from regular Sunday Mass. This is National Catholic Schools week, so the school choir is singing in the Masses of the different parishes that the school serves, today and next Sunday as well.
Not sure if you’ve been to Catholic services,
but there’s a point where they offer “the prayers of the faithful” and someone reads a list of prayer requests– after each request the congregation says “Lord, hear our prayer”.
    So it’ll go something like
“… For Betty Smith who is fighting a battle with cancer”
    “Lord hear our prayer”
“For the leaders of the world that they may find peaceful solutions to end war and conflict”
    “Lord hear our prayer”
    …and so it goes.
This morning during those prayers one of them was
“For the unborn, who aren’t given a chance at life”
