If you’re TAX EXEMPT you better watch out

February 20th, 2008 by Angela | Filed under Ramblings.

I enjoyed Kelly’s post this morning over on b5

You might enjoy reading that one too! I know I did!

I agree with Kelly in that elections are supposed to be about candidates. Churches are Not supposed to endorse candidates OR raise money OR make statements for OR against any of the candidates.

I believe it’s deplorable that there are churches out there (as in Kelly’s post) that would take the Bible and use the verses within to condemn OR praise any candidate OR party running for public office.

It’s one thing to pray for our politicians that God would lead them in a direction that is favorable and in line with what the bible says – I think it’s ok to do that BUT it has to be from the heart and it has to be for the right reasons. You may Not pray in order to try and convince your congregation to choose a candidate by name, party, OR even personal affiliation. At least that is what I have always thought, right?

Here’s something else I’ve been thinking a lot about.. I wonder if distributing VOTER GUIDES is appropriate to do within the walls of a church? I would think that you could get a voter guide from a local or state operated building BUT should they be available at church? Should voter guides be passed out at churches, schools, OR public charities that are not-for-profit OR TAX EXEMPT?

When was the last time you picked up a voter guide? Did it mention all the candidates fair and square? Where do you pick up your voter guide from? I know for a fact that churches here in Omaha pass them out. Is that within local and federal guidelines?

Let’s discuss this and maybe somebody out there can set me straight on this because I honestly don’t know.

I don’t think churches should be involved in the voting process in any way shape or form and still be allowed to maintain a tax exempt status.

If some of these churches had to pay even a small portion of taxes perhaps our taxes wouldn’t be so damn high.

If an evangelist can afford a $20,000 toilet they need to be paying taxes.

That’s one big crock of crap – literally!

I think that if voter guides are going to be passed out at church then information about all parties involved should be passed out fair and square.

I don’t think elections should be discussed at the pulpit OR candidates invited to speak.

Praying for the outcome without saying which side should win the election is ok.

What is very confusing to me is how churches get away with having a candidate come to speak? That’s what I don’t understand.

I hope you guys will read Kelly’s post over on B5 media. I provided a link in the original post I wrote. It’s very interesting.
