Bill Maher on the Pope and Catholics

I don’t like Bill Maher.

What a shmuck!

He should apologize for what he said.

Just because there are few bad apples out there doesn’t mean you can condemn an entire denomination for the acts of a few.

What a jerk!

Facts, thoughts OR opinions on this?

I think he’s crude, but I think he is also right. I find no need for an apology. I think our country has gotten a little to “apology happy” these days. I also think “a few bad apples” is the understatement of the century. ;)

So for a few bad peeps that call themselves Christians you would disassociate yourself with Christianity? (just curious)

I guess I’m confused as to what part of what he said that you think he’s right on? Pretty please clarify your point.

I dont’ watch his show, and I don’t like him too much but you know he is an entertainer and uses current issues to get a laugh or make a point. Like many, he takes a grain of truth and plays with it.

Thanks for the clip. That’s the first time I have seen the whole piece.

There is not a little truth in what he said; there is a ton of it. Gross way of saying it, but grossness, unfortunately, is in. It gets laughs.

He gets laughs and Jon Daily gets laughs, but they are really quite serious people. Humor is a very powerful weapon in the hands of experts and they are experts.

The Pope, to his credit, though, is facing the pedophilia scandal head on and has to get credit for that. He’s trying to do something about it, or, at least, is giving that impression.

It turns out that the Pope technically was not a Nazi, but a member of the Hitler Youth organization. That’s splitting hairs, I know, but at age 14, what other option did he have in Nazi Germany? It wasn’t a matter of “going along to get along.” It was a matter of going along in order not to be murdered or put in a concentration camp. However, I really don’t know what his frame of mind was at that time so I don’t know if he did it because of fear of retribution or because he wanted to do it.

One thing for sure about Maher, he is provocative.

I would disassociate myself with Christianity because of a few people, I also don’t think he was saying to disassociate with Catholics (who in my opinion aren’t Christians but that is an entirely different topic). A lot of people claim to be things they aren’t…

Anyways, he is right - yes, if this was a nationwide chain of daycares and the pope was the CEO he would be in jail right now…I think he is right that the “church” gets away with much - this goes for every denomination, not just the catholics….

There are bad people that go to church every day. Just because a few Catholics did a very bad thing does not mean all Catholics are lumped into the equation.

I believe that many Catholics are Christians. Ok I’ll bite.. how come you don’t believe that Catholics are not Christians?

Oh my…I will need to do an entire blog post about that. There are so many reasons - I will start working on it and let you know when it is complete.

The problem was that a religious institution had a policy of indifference and protected those few catholics within their ranks who were committing crimes against children. It is not a dismissal of a religion to challenge, question or criticize one branch of it, or an institution whose policies go against the wellbeing of its parishioners and the public.

Raised a Catholic in Omaha, with a Catholic education, I am not offended by this at all. While the current pope is doing a much better job confronting paedophilia among the priesthood, for too many years the church was complacent and in some cases tolerated the problem. This does not reflect good on the Catholic church and its institution. Frankly in many cases it deserves all of the ridicule that people dish out. Are all the priests bad? No, of course not. The vast majority are religious, pious people. But when higher echelon bishops or cardinals shuffle a few paedophile priests around parishes, there is a major problem.

Also, just saying Bill Maher is a schmuck does not address the problem at all. It doesn’t refute his arguments either, and frankly sounds childish.

I don’t like Bill Maher, I don’t like what he said AND I still think he’s a schmuck. Wah!

Bill Maher is one of the few people who are as ugly on the inside as they are on the outside.

WOW, what an excellent way to put that PTG.

“how come you don’t believe that Catholics are not Christians?”

Because that’s what HER church/pastor told her.

I personally believe that there are a lot of “Catholics” that are more Christian than many think.

There are going to be a lot of people in heaven and titles won’t trump what’s in the heart and in the end.. He will be the ultimate decision maker.

I agree Tracy.. her church/pastor told her that Catholics are not Christian and she probably believed it.

Sounds like Lutheran theology. Catholics have made a raft of enemies over the centuries. The Catholic leadership has been made up of flesh since Peter, but the rock remains unchanging.
