Barack Obama, Sworn In as 44th President

January 20th, 2009 by Angela | Filed under Ramblings.

Thank goodness for C-Span on Youtube OR I would not have been able to see Barack Obama speak to our nation after being sworn in as the first African American President of the United States of America.

The first African American President. That’s kinda cool, don’t you think? Why not? All men are created equal, right? I think it’s neat that we have our first black president. I think it’s great that black people everywhere can see that it doesn’t matter what color you are, you can do anything if you put your mind and your heart in the right place. This isn’t just a lesson for black people. It’s a lesson for all of us to learn.

One thing that Barack Obama said in his speech that stood out to me was this: “a new era of responsibility.”

I hope this means that people will start taking responsibility for themselves. I hope this means that people will stop blaming others when things do not go their way. I hope this means that Republicans will stop blaming Democrats and Democrats will stop blaming Republicans. I hope this means that citizens across this country will get up out of their chairs (if they can), roll up their sleeves, and get to work. No more excuses as to why you couldn’t do this, or why you couldn’t do that, or why you lost your job, or why you haven’t found a job, and the list goes on and on… right? I hope this new era of responsibility means that we rely on ourselves and we take responsibility for the decisions that need to be made and the work that needs to be done.

The other thing that stood out to me was at the end where he said: “and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us” and “thank you, God bless you and God bless the United States of America.” I noticed in the transcript that people forgot to keep in the “thank you portion” of his speech. Isn’t his thank you at the end part of his speech too?
